Algorithm
Set of rules used by search engines to determine the best web results
Alt Text
Alternative Text; A word or phrase that describes an image on a website to bots and visitors
Analytics
A record of website visits that can be looked at through a number of different demographics to interpret visitor behavior
Backlinks
A link to a website from an entirely separate website
Blog
A collection of articles on a website that is regularly updated by the author
Bounce Rate
The percentage of visits where the visitor chooses to immediately return to the search results without spending time on the website or visiting additional pages
Business Page
A public profile dedicated to a company that lists contact information and allows viewers to post messages and reviews to engage with an online community
Button
Commonly, a rectangular box on a page and when pressed an action is performed; i.e. click here for client forms
Call To Action
A prompt that asks a visitor to a website to act on something; i.e. sign up for a newsletter
Comment
A written remark that a social media user makes on a post
Content
Text that provides information on a certain subject
Crawler
The process search engines undergo to be indexed
Domain
What people type to pull up a website; i.e. www.domain.com
Duplicate Content
Information that is featured on multiple websites
Follower
A social media user who agrees to see posts from another user in their feed
Icon
Commonly, a square image that when clicked, leads to an outside web page
Indexing
The process in which search engines incorporate a website’s pages and any changes into its index
Keywords
Words or phrases that identify what a web page is about; i.e. mental health, depression, anxiety
Keyword Stuffing
SEO practice of overloading a web page with keywords in an attempt to rank higher; this technique is penalized by search engines
Landing Page
The web page that visitors are taken to when they enter a specific URL; i.e. the landing page for Therapysites is http://www.therapysites.com
Like
The act of a social media user clicking the “thumbs up” icon on a post, comment, or page to show appreciation toward the material
Meta Information
Information that search engines use to get an understanding of the purpose of a website
Microblogging
The act of making short, frequent posts to a blog
Newsfeed
An electronic transmission of news within a social media platform that provides updates on a continuous basis
Non-Responsive
Non-responsive designs do not automatically adjust to the screen width of the device that is being used, making them more difficult to navigate
Organic Rankings
Search engine results that appear when a website matches with the keywords entered into the search engine
Post
A message on a social media page that can include text, photos, and videos
PPC
Pay-Per-Click; ads located on the top of a search engine that is sold and charges for each click; i.e. Google Ads
Rankings
A website’s position in search engine results
Responsive Design
Responsive designs automatically adjust to the width of the screen of the device it is pulled up in. Google prefers websites with responsive designs
Robots.txt
Communication between websites and crawlers
Schema
A universal coding language that allows search engines to define what certain information means; i.e. this is an email, this is an address
Search Engines
Programs that search a database and provide results based on a series of identifying factors; i.e. Google, Yahoo, and Bing
Secondary Domain
An additional URL that leads to the same website as a primary domain
SEO
Search Engine Optimization; the process of using different strategies to increase a website’s rankings within different search engines
SERP
Search Engine Results Page; what appears when someone searches a topic on a search engine
Site Map
A textually organized model of a website’s content that allows users to navigate through the site; typically organized as a list of pages
Social Media Platform
A system that is used for posting content and connecting with an online community; i.e. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter/X
Tag
A mention of a certain place or person in a social media post
Traffic
The number of visitors a website receives
Trending
A topic that is widely mentioned or discussed on the internet, especially on social media
Unique Content
Distinctive text found only on a singular website that sets that site apart from the crowd
URL
Uniform Resource Locator; also known a web address or domain
Viral
Information that quickly spreads across the internet, especially on social media
