Telecounseling
TELETHERAPY SERVICE
Telecounseling for therapists
As technology becomes more ingrained in our everyday lives, it has changed how the population seeks healthcare. More specifically, it has opened up a new way to get treatment for mental health conditions — telecounseling. Telecounseling, or teletherapy, is the act of offering therapy services over the internet.
TherapySites offers a telecounseling service that gives therapists HIPAA-compliant software to host virtual therapy sessions with their clients. Our service also includes other practice management and client communication capabilities, such as credit card processing, online appointment scheduling, and secure messaging.

What equipment do I need to use TherapySites’ telecounseling platform?
You need a computer with a built-in camera and adequate internet connection to use TherapySites’ telecounseling platform. Aside from equipment, you also need a quiet, private space from which to host your therapy sessions. A room with a door is preferable so that you’re free from distractions.
How do therapists get paid with TherapySites’ teletherapy service?
TherapySites’ teletherapy service uses a payment processor to facilitate payments between therapists and their clients. You provide the payment processor with your bank account information. When a client pays for a session, the payment gets held for about a week before it’s deposited directly into your bank account.
Why might therapy clients prefer telecounseling to in-person counseling?
There are many reasons clients might prefer telecounseling to in-person counseling, including:
• Comfort: Clients may feel more relaxed discussing their condition from the privacy of their own home.
• Access: Clients may have a physical disability, no means of transportation, no childcare, or something else preventing them from making it to your practice for in-person sessions.
• Convenience: Clients don’t have to spend time commuting to your practice, and they can schedule around their work hours or other obligations.
• Affordability: Clients don’t have to worry about the cost of gas or public transit to get to and from your practice.
By offering telecounseling, you are able to accommodate what works for more clients, which also helps you fill your schedule and grow your practice.
Is telecounseling covered by insurance?
Generally speaking, telecounseling is usually covered by Medicare and Medicaid as well as private insurance. However, coverage can vary by insurance provider or plan, state laws, and specific condition or treatment. Encourage your clients to research what their coverage is before beginning therapy to ensure any out-of-pocket costs align with their budget.
What mental health conditions can you treat with teletherapy?
You can treat many mental health conditions with teletherapy, including:
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Bipolar disorder
• ADD/ADHD
• PTSD
• Substance abuse
• Grief and loss
• Couple and family dynamics
In-person therapy is better for conditions that require close monitoring, such as schizophrenia, because it’s easier to pick up on non-verbal cues. If you primarily treat conditions like this, teletherapy may not be a beneficial offering for your practice.
